That feeling of walking on a pebble that isn’t there along with burning, numbness, or tingling in the ball of the foot is often a neuroma. Eastern Podiatry offers the full range of neuroma care in Las Vegas, from conservative measures to minimally invasive procedures.

What is a neuroma

A neuroma is an irritated, inflamed nerve in the foot that swells into a non-cancerous mass; as it swells, the surrounding tissue grows more irritated. The most common type, a Morton’s neuroma, develops between the third and fourth toes, though neuromas can form between other toes or in the ball of the foot.

What you might feel

Neuroma symptoms come and go: sometimes intermittent, sometimes constant. The most common include:

  • Burning pain in the ball of the foot
  • The sensation of a bump or pebble between the toes
  • Trouble standing for long stretches
  • Numbness and tingling

Symptoms often flare in shoes and ease when you slip them off and rub the foot only to return the moment you’re back on your feet.

What causes them

The exact cause is hard to pin down, but high heels, tight shoes, and high-impact activity all raise the risk. Neuromas also develop on top of other foot problems that crowd the nerves, including bunions, hammertoes, flat feet, and other foot deformities.

How we treat neuromas

We start conservative: cortisone injections, footwear changes, foot pads, custom orthotics, and anti-inflammatory medication. When those aren’t enough, two more targeted options are available, and our surgical training means we can offer both:

  • Minimally invasive surgery: Removing the neuroma or the tissue irritating the nerve, with a short recovery period.
  • Radiofrequency ablation: Heat therapy that changes how the nerve transmits pain signals, without harming nearby tissue.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a Morton’s neuroma feel like?

Many patients describe standing on a pebble or a folded sock, plus burning, numbness, or tingling in the ball of the foot.

Can a neuroma go away without surgery?

Many improve significantly with orthotics, injections, and footwear changes. Surgery and ablation are reserved for cases that don’t respond to conservative care.

What shoes help?

Wide, low-heeled shoes with a roomy toe box and good cushioning take pressure off the nerve and ease symptoms.

Are neuromas linked to other foot problems?

Yes. Bunions, hammertoes, and flat feet can all crowd the nerves and contribute, so we assess the whole foot.
