Stiff, swollen, aching ankles can quietly shrink your world; fewer walks, more sitting, activities you used to love left on the shelf. At Eastern Podiatry in Las Vegas, we help patients get ahead of ankle arthritis and stay on their feet.
Ankle arthritis is chronic inflammation of the joint that brings recurring swelling, aching, and pain to the ankle and the ligaments around it. The most common form is osteoarthritis — a wear-and-tear condition in which the cartilage that cushions the ends of your bones gradually breaks down. Once that cushion thins, bone starts to work against bone, and the joint stiffens.
Osteoarthritis often traces back to an old injury and shows up years later; which is why a sprain or fracture you barely remember can catch up with you. It can also come from mechanics that load the joint unevenly, such as flat feet, very high arches, or a gait that rolls too far inward or outward. Because our doctors treat the whole kinetic chain, they look at how you move, not just where it hurts.
There's no cure for arthritis, but there's a lot we can do to slow it and quiet the symptoms. Conservative care such as bracing, custom orthotics, anti-inflammatory measures, activity adjustments, and injections keeps most patients active and comfortable. When arthritis is advanced and daily life is limited, Dr. Nguyen and Dr. Dafforn can discuss reconstructive surgical options, an area of specific training for both. Any lasting ankle pain deserves an evaluation before the joint wears down further.
Can ankle arthritis be reversed?
No, but its progression can be slowed and the pain well managed. The earlier we start, the more joint function we can protect.
Why does my ankle hurt years after an old injury?
Post-traumatic osteoarthritis is common. A past fracture or bad sprain can wear down cartilage over time, so pain surfaces long after the injury healed.
What can I do besides surgery?
Plenty. Orthotics, bracing, anti-inflammatories, targeted activity changes, and injections all help. Surgery is only considered when the joint is badly worn and conservative care isn't enough.
When should I come in?
Any ankle pain, stiffness, or swelling that keeps returning is worth evaluating. Catching it early gives us more options.
